Caring For Yourself and Caring for Others – Memory Loss and Caregiver Support

Mental Health America is dedicated to promoting mental health and achieving victory over mental illnesses and addictions through advocacy, education, research and service. Mental Health America also seeks to provide information and resources to assist in maintaining a good quality of life. This is especially prevalent if we find ourselves caring for those living with dementia and other memory issues. One of the issues that a caregiver must be aware of is that of their own. When some people dedicate part of their life to taking care of others, mental health conditions can develop such as depression and anxiety. Coping with one’s own mental health issues while taking care of someone with a memory loss condition is the focus of the Caregiver Support Program through MHA of the MidSouth. When a caretaker can better manage their own mental health struggles, they will be able to better assist their care receiver.

Being a caregiver to a person who is living with Alzheimer’s or Dementia can be a rewarding position to be in if they are given enough support and resources. It is important to let caregivers know that they are not alone in what they are feeling when things get tough which is why Mental Health America of the MidSouth often has programs and training sessions to help support them in their journeys. Some of those programs and training sessions can help not only caregivers, but also family members and people who have memory loss cope with what is going on in their lives. Some of these programs are called “Keeping Your Brain Healthy”, “Caregiver Stress”, “Successful Aging” and “Aging and Mental Health.” These programs are great when it comes to providing hands-on tools for caregivers, spouses and extended family of those who need to be cared for.
